Religion was a huge part of Tom's life and he became an important member of the Zion church in Settle. The above photo is one of the earliest of Zion church members. Tom was not blind to the flaws he found amongst religious people though.  He recognised hypocrisy when he saw it and couldn't resist mocking those who went to church mainly to show off or to gossip!  His poem, "Church Gangin' " ridicules this behaviour in a gentle manner.  Perhaps some of the characters he writes about can be seen in churches today?
