Volunteers – the lifeblood of Society

When was the last time you gave something back to your community? Maybe you helped a neigbour. Perhaps you volunteered at your local theatre? Maybe you gave some time to a community garden project. Remember the feeling you got from giving something back? If you’re anything like me, it’s a warm fuzzy feeling. My experience of volunteering has always been positive. Through volunteering I kickstarted my career. I learnt new skills and made amazing new friends.
Almost 40% of people in the UK volunteer at least once a year. In 2015 volunteering was worth more that £22.6bn to the UK economy. So here’s a big shout out to all the volunteers out there!
As a registered charity, Settle Stories is powered by a team of volunteers. People help out from all over the globe – ahh the power of the internet! We have people that pop into the office helping reconcile our Petty Cash, helping with event promotion, helping with admin – the list goes on!
The newest addition to the Settle Stories volunteer family is Jane Emmison, a local lady in Settle. We asked her to tell us a little more about her before we publish her first blog later this week.
‘Hi folks, its Jane here, I am new to Settle Stories and hope to put a bit of a blog together every month about some amazing aspects of Settle Stories, this inovative arts deliverer.
I have painted and written pieces of work since I was a child. I have completed variuous creative writing courses, written poetry and short stories, published a newsletter, have a B.A. Hons Degree and studied Fine Art in Brighton and Leeds. I was Married to a Medical Artist for eighteen years and now share an art interest with my friends.
I hope to entertain you with my contribution to our monthly literature output on Settle Stories website.
So, bye for now, looking forward to working with you all.
Jane
