Sita Brand

Sita Brand

Sita Brand is the founder and director of Settle Stories. After a degree in Drama at Exeter University, Sita got a job with Common Lore storytellers and musicians with whom she toured for several years. Since then she has worked as an actress, presenter, writer, director, producer and arts consultant. In 1999, she went to Singapore as Artist in Residence funded by the British Council. Here she toured her one woman show Memories of an Indian Childhood to Singapore and Malaysia and ran workshops in storytelling.

On returning to the UK in 2000, she helped set up the Rich Mix Centre in London and established the multi-million pound programme Decibel for Arts Council England. More recently she performed for the North Pennine Storytelling Festival, Lime Tree Festival and in 2016 is set to tour her show 'Memories of an Indian Childhood' across the UK.

I'm struck by how well Brand retains the attention of her young audience despite having to make herself heard above the thumping musical beats coming from outside the yurt.

Afterwards we troop into the darkness. From the conversations outside, it's apparent that many of those in the tent have returned for the second night running, reminding me of something Brand had said earlier about how, at last year's storytelling festival, many people went thinking they'd just go to one event but found themselves attending to several. Why? "That's just about the simple pleasure of listening to a damn good yarn."
