Review: Winnie the Pooh Day

Winnie the Pooh Day in Settle, 20/01/2018. Settle Stories Autumn/Winter Events Season. Reviewed by Gill O'Donnell for the Craven Herald and Pioneer

In recent years the variety of events and range of performers taking part in Settle Storytelling Festival have conclusively demonstrated that stories are not just an activity for children.

However, events like hugely popular Winnie The Pooh party, aimed specifically at 4-9 year olds, proved that it is never too early to get children hooked on stories!  This was a truly charming event, involving party games, stories, activities and a proper picnic with "piglet punch", "Tigger tails" and proper runny honey rolls! In fact, some of the adults even weakened and joined in with the picnic!

Although the magnificent pairing of Charles Tyrer and Sita Brand from Settle Stories made the event seem effortless, any teacher will tell you that keeping such a diverse age range of children entertained and "on task" for an extended period demands considerable planning and a lot of talent in order to keep things running smoothly. Throughout the afternoon the children not only enjoyed stories about Winnie the Pooh and his friends but also joined in action songs and games and took turns at pinning the tale on Eeyore as well as hunting for heffalumps. There was also a chance to make a Winnie the Pooh mask as well as an opportunity to think more about the friendship shown between the characters and create a poster about their own best friends.

Clearly the event was not only enjoyable for the children but also had sufficient ideas for parents to think about ways in which they too could encourage the children to explore and share stories more at home. Another demonstration of how the creative talents of Settle Stories can actually help to spread enchantment.
